When Alexandra was 9 years old, her mother lost her job. Without her income, they couldn’t afford rent and had nowhere to go. And no way to eat.

With no options, a mother and her daughter were forced to live on the street. Trying to survive.

Fortunately, Alexandra’s mom heard about Raleigh Rescue Mission and they came to our doors. Friends like you enabled us to give them warm beds to sleep in, meals to eat in our dining room and a safe place for a mother and daughter to live.

Alexandra and her mom’s stay at the Mission became a turning point for their family.  Alexandra’s mother completed our program and we helped her find transitional housing. She was able to sustain the help we provided and support her family through Alexandra’s childhood and young adult life. When Alexandra was in high school, she was looking for a volunteer opportunity and remembered the Mission and how the staff and volunteers impacted her life and wanted to pass that onto someone else.

“I enjoy giving back because they’ve given so much to me and my mom.”

Today, you can find Alexandra serving meals in our dining room, offering encouragement and love to those we serve—especially the children staying with us.

I see little kids here and I realize that I was that age when I was here, she says. I enjoy being able to help.

Alexandra’s mom is now a cardiac nurse, pursuing a Master’s Degree and Alexandra hopes to become an oncologist so she can continue helping people when they need it most—Changing Lives Here.
